Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely Visit with CSUS Scholars

All American BoysOn Friday, October 5th, Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, authors of All American Boys, visited with 8th grade CSUS scholars to talk about race and culture, writing, reading, and being teenagers in today’s world. The scholars, and most CSUS staff members, were expecting to Skype with Reynolds and Kiely until four scholar fans were sent to retrieve them from the CSUS conference room. The authors entered to a room of cheering, screaming, and more than a few tears of joy, most especially from the fans who did not expect to find the authors waiting for them.

Scholars hung on every word the authors had to say about their experience writing a book about race issues together and asked poignant and thoughtful questions about race and culture in America today, about writing a book about race with a person of a different race, and about being a professional writer. When the hour long visit was over, scholars swarmed the authors with hugs, requests for autographs, and words of thanks to them for sharing their stories and for coming to visit CSUS scholars in person. It was a day that CSUS teachers and scholars won’t soon forget.
