Posted on 10/27/2015
The Cambridge Street Upper School Cultural Proficiency Team has been invited by the National Center for Race Amity to participate in the 2015 National Race Amity Conference. This year’s theme is The Impact of Media and Education on the Other Tradition. This year’s conference will be held November 19, 20, and 21 at the Boston Marriott in Quincy, MA.

AmityOn its website the center describes race amity and the other tradition as: The perspective of “The Other Tradition” is that in America’s racial history the dominant tradition of racism has always had a parallel moral counterweight that promoted access, equity, and social justice. This moral counterweight holds at its core humanistic and spiritual values accentuated by amity and close cross-racial/cross-cultural collaboration, which in contrast to racism, is (amity) “The Other Tradition.”

The CSUS Cultural Proficiency Team will facilitate a workshop on entitled Recharging as a Culturally Responsive Educator. CSUS facilitators will include Norah Connolly, Melanie Morrison, Tracey Pratt and Betsy Preval. Principal Fernandez has been invited to be a keynote panelist on the theme: The Role of Education in Society With Regard to America’s Racial Divide.

Other presenters include Byron Barnett, Host of+ Urban Update, WHDH; Tommy Chang, Ed.D., Superintendent of Boston Public Schools; Kevin Cullen, Columnist  The Boston Globe;  Celeste Headlee, NPR Commentator; Peggy McIntosh Anti-racist Educational Activist; Barbara Madeloni, President, Massachusetts Teachers Association; Mary Skipper, Ph.D., Superintendent of Somerville Public Schools; and Margot Stern Strom, President Emerita, Facing History and Ourselves;
