First Youth Leadership Summit
Each upper school in Cambridge started an Out-of-School Time Youth
Leadership Team this year. These teams help their peers in middle school
learn about – and get involved in – activities after school and during
summer. Youth Leadership Teams are facilitated by each school's
Commonwealth Corps-Middle School Network Liaison.
On April 12,
student leaders from CSUS and RAUC came together for a summit centered
around the importance of out-of-school time. Out-of-school time (before
school, after school, weekends, and vacations) is an important time for
middle school youth to follow their interests, be with friends, and
develop skills for life!
In one game at the summit, the youth
leaders became experts about the numerous summer opportunities available
to middle school students. Summer is coming soon! Ask the youth leaders
in your school if you need information about programs.
One
highlight of the summit was a visit from high school students at CRLS.
High school leaders presented their leadership groups – the Youth
Involvement Subcommittee and STARS – and gave the 8th grade student
leaders tips on how to continue their leadership in high school.
Overall,
the first youth leadership summit was a great success and set an
excellent foundation for the growth of the Youth Leadership Teams and
future summits.
If you are a rising 7th or 8th grade student
interested in joining the Youth Leadership Team, talk to one of the
current youth leaders or contact Lorena Widmer ([email protected]). Your youth leaders at CSUS are: Andre Colas, Crystal Ventura, Jonathan Cenescar, Kevin Reddick, and Yasmin Abdella.
