Seventh Graders Create a Mural Aimed at Capturing Identity

As a part of an interdisciplinary unit about the Holocaust, 7th grade CSUS scholars have created a mural that now hangs in the 7th and 8th grade hallway. Throughout the unit, scholars have been considering the theme of “identity,” asking themselves what identity means, what aspects make up their identity, and how identity impacts decisions. The mural captures aspects of identity that both unite the grade and distinguish each individual scholar.

The mural includes various words and symbols that capture cultural identity from the the word “Portuguese” to a map of Bangladesh. The mural also captures other aspects of identity in finishing the sentence “We are…” with words such as “authentic,” “musicians,” and “animal lovers.” The mural also includes the different religions and languages of students and their families as well as pictures of the students when they were younger. One corner of the mural finishes the sentence “We are future…” with various professions the students aspire to from “president” to “pediatrician.” The work of the 7th grade reminds us all of the incredible diversity we have at CSUS and how we should acknowledge and affirm our multiple identities.
