Message from Manuel J. Fernandez & Christen Sohn: February 22, 2021

Dear CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

As this cold and snowy break draws to a close, the CSUS community is turning its attention to the start of our second semester and the return of some of our scholars and staff for in-person learning beginning March 1. Please note the important dates below.

  • Monday, February 22: No school for all scholars; professional development and preparation for in-person learning for staff. Semester 1 Report cards will also be published in ASPEN on 2/22; you will receive a separate email on Monday with information on how to access report cards. If you would like a copy mailed to your home, please email Ms. Sohn.
  • Tuesday, February 23: Scholars return to remote classes. All CSUS scholars should begin the day in their Cobra Dens at 8:55AM. Cobra Den Leaders will use the week of February 22 to support scholars in understanding schedule changes and in-person learning protocols where applicable. Cobra Dens will also join together for a whole-school assembly on Tuesday morning to engage in a whole-school Black History Month Assembly. We look forward to celebrating our learning and our scholars!
  • Thursday, February 25, 6-7:30PM: Virtual information session and safety presentation for families of scholars returning to in-person learning.
We will email a video and slides from the meeting on Friday morning and also post them on the Cambridge Street website for any caregivers who are unable to attend.
  • Week of March 1: In-person learning scheduled to begin for scholars whose families elected to transition in-person learning using the January Family Survey. The In-Person Learning schedule for CSUS will be as follows:
    • 6th and 8th Grade Scholars will be in-person on Mondays and Tuesdays each week from 8:55AM - 12:15PM
    • 7th Grade Scholars will be in-person on Thursdays and Fridays each week from 8:55AM - 12:15PM
    • All scholars will engage in remote learning on Wednesdays.

A note to our families returning to in-person learning - the district should be emailing and mailing hard copy packets with the following information:

  • “Investments in Safety” overview of the CPS COVID-19 precautions
  • Updated: "What Should I Do?” checklist
  • Updated “Masks Keep You Healthy” flyer
  • COVID-19 TESTING FAQ on COVID-19 Testing for Students
  • COVID-19 TESTING Permissions Form flyer
  • Updated Bus Safety Procedures During COVID-19
  • Safety Everywhere You Go
  • Brochure from Safe Routes to School for tips

We also want to affirm for our families continuing with remote learning that while there has been much communication around the return to in-person learning in March, the majority of our community will be continuing to learn remotely and continue to be an equal focus and priority for our teachers and staff. We hope that you will see some of your and scholars’ suggestions reflected in the changes and improvements evident in our second semester schedule.

We look forward to connecting with all families during the month of March to see how the new semester is progressing. We continue to value your feedback, and encourage you to reach out to your scholar’s Den Leader or any member of our teaching team or staff with any questions or ideas. As always, we thank you for entrusting us with your scholar’s learning. We understand that you have choices regarding your child’s education, and we appreciate you choosing CSUS.

Peace,
Manuel and Christen
