Message from Manuel J. Fernandez: October 24, 2018

Dear CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

I hope this letter finds you adjusting to changes in the weather, which remind us what it means to live in New England. Please read this letter carefully as it highlights important news regarding CSUS. As usual, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the main office.

Yesterday we unveiled our new school schedule. The increase in enrollment in grade 6 has made it challenging for us to give those scholars ample time to enjoy lunch and recess. As a result, we have extended the lunch and recess period for all grades by twelve minutes. All scholars now have a total of forty-two minutes for a combined lunch and recess period. This additional time will ensure that all scholars will enjoy at least twenty minutes of recess each day.

This Thursday, October 25th from 6 to 8PM the Cambridge STEAM Initiative is holding STEAM It Up, an upper school family math night at Rindge Ave Upper School. There will be many community partners in attendance, fun and rigorous activities and pizza for all. CSUS scholars whom attend will be eligible for extra credit. CSUS will not assign Science or Math homework that night. We hope you can join us!

Our first assembly highlighting our new scholar identity logo will take place on October 31. It will focus on Social Justice (-I stand up for the rights of others and work against all forms of bigotry in our community.) We look forward to sharing the outcome of this first assembly of its kind.

Mix It Up Day will take place on Wednesday October 31st. The purpose of Mix It Up Day is to encourage scholars to engage with peers they don’t normally interact with at lunch. The idea is to promote inclusion, new friendships, and reinforce a bully free zone. This year’s theme is Wacky Wednesday. Scholars are encouraged to Twin with a friend or dress like a teacher! Check in with your scholar about their experience.

Please be advised that tomorrow, October 24th is an Early Release Day. All scholars will be dismissed at 12:55PM. The next Early Release day will be Thursday, November 1st.

CSUS eighth graders will attend a screening of T.H.U.G. (The Hate You Give) on Tuesday, November 13th. The movie is based on the critically acclaimed novel, written by Angie Thomas. All scholars must have a signed permission in order to attend. This movie is rated PG-13.

On behalf of TEAM CSUS, thank you for choosing us! We are humbled that you have entrusted us with your child’s education. We are aware that you have choices and we are pleased that you chose us. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any TEAM CSUS staff member if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.
