October 2, 2018

Dear CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you all so very much for attending our first combined Back to School Night Block Party last Thursday night.

We hope that you enjoyed yourself and were able to have any questions or concerns answered about our school’s curriculum and program. If you were unable to attend or want a refresher we have placed the Powerpoint presentations from each grade level on the CSUS website under the tab Academics > Grade pages.

In September, we unveiled our new logo embedded with the attributes of a CSUS Scholar. You may recall the scholar attributes listed below.

  • Social Justice - I stand up for the rights of others and work against all forms of bigotry in our community.
  • Curiosity - I am engaged in my learning and seek new discoveries from teachers, scholars and through my own mindfulness.
  • Honor - I show respect and appreciation for CSUS, myself and others.
  • Originality - I encourage individuality and uniqueness in myself and others.
  • Leadership - I encourage and support others to be their best selves while leading by example.
  • Academic Excellence - I use the Powerful Practices to support my learning and my success in all subjects.
  • Resilience - When faced with challenges I work harder and smarter until I complete the task.

The attributes are posted throughout the school and we will highlight one attribute each month at a school-wide community meeting. This month we will highlight Social Justice.

This week we are holding our annual fall Listening Conferences to provide CSUS staff the opportunity to listen and learn from the scholar and family about the scholar’s strengths, challenges, and goals for the year. It has been nice to see and interact with so many parents and caregivers attending the conferences. If you have not been able to attend a conference, please contact your child’s homeroom advisor. Arrangements can be made to schedule a meeting time at a time convenient for you. This is a very important opportunity to strengthen our home-to-school partnership.

On Thursday, October 25 from 6 to 8PM the Cambridge STEAM Initiative is holding STEAM It Up, an upper school math family night at Rindge Ave Upper School. There will be many community partners in attendance, fun and rigorous activities, and pizza for all. CSUS Scholars whom attend will be eligible for extra credit. CSUS will not assign science or math homework that night. I hope all of you can join us on Oct 25th.

CSUS unveiled its Diversity Dialogues Series in October of 2016. The series is an opportunity for adult members of the CSUS community to come together and discuss issues that are relevant to the diverse culture of the school and wider community. The first session of this year’s Diversity Dialogues series, Partnering for Scholar Success: Unpacking the Panorama Survey will be held on Tues. Oct 23 from 6 - 8pm. The Panorama Survey was conducted last spring by the district to elicit feedback from parents and caregivers about their experiences with the schools. (Please note that we changed the date from Oct. 25 so that families could attend the Cambridge Initiative Steam It Up!)

As always, the evening will begin with a buffet dinner from 6-6:30PM. From 6:30 – 8PM we will have a presentation and dialogue on the results of last spring’s Panorama Family survey and how it may inform our strategies for family engagement at CSUS. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to our Sr. Clerk, Tiffany Robinson so we may plan the meal accordingly. Please inform her of any dietary restrictions. We hope you can join us. Please remember that this is an adults-only event. If you need childcare at the school that night, please indicate that in your RSVP.

Every fall we sponsor grade level community-building field trips. On October 10, the 6th grade will visit the Honey Pot Hill Orchard in Stow. On Oct. 12, grade 7 will visit Teamworks in Acton and Grade 8 will spend the day at Danehy Park in No. Cambridge. These field trips are wonderful opportunities to strengthen the community relationships that we have been fostering since the beginning of the year. Please check in with your scholars about next week’s experience.

On behalf of TEAM CSUS, thank you for choosing CSUS! We are humbled that you have entrusted us with your child’s education. We are aware that you have choices and we are pleased that you chose us. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any TEAM CSUS staff member if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.
