Use of the Library

King Open and Cambridge Street Upper School share a busy library that acts as a classroom and meeting place. As such, please pay special consideration to the guidelines below.

Instructional Visits ("Library Time" and Project Support)
Students in grades K-4 visit the library/lab weekly for instruction in literature appreciation, research, and technology. In keeping with our departmental mission, library and technology staff believe that it enriches learning when weekly visits support classroom literacy and research activities. Talk to Jen Mason Stott and Ann Larson to coordinate. Teachers in grades 5-8 are welcome to bring their classes for instruction, project support, or book talks; co-plan with Ms. Jen at least one day in advance. Upper School students may also visit as part of a library elective or book group.

Teacher Use
If the library is not in use, teachers may use the small-group table or the table/rug area to meet with classes or individual students for instructional purposes (not discipline or confidential testing). Please remember that the library is a classroom, and plan ahead! Before bringing a group, PLEASE SCHEDULE YOUR VISIT with Jen and Lestra. Do not rely on any area or computer being free for drop-ins. Students and library instruction take first priority in all spaces and at computers.

Drop-In Visits
Students, teachers, and families are welcome to visit the library any time during open hours. Because of the high volume of students our library staff must serve, students in all grades must have a pass and show it to a library staff member in order to enter the library for independent browsing and computer use.

Outside School Hours
Parents and caregivers are welcome to use the library for checkout and book browsing from 8 - 8:40AM and 2:55 - 3:10PM. Students arriving alone before 8:40AM must get a library pass in the cafeteria. Family members may sign up for a “Family Library Card" and check out two books. (Please see our complete check-out procedures here.)

Computer Use
Computers in the library may be used throughout the day, before, and after school for school work. If students are not using computers, teachers may do so. Please do not print personal materials.
