Kate and Greg, your CitySprouts garden team, would like to wish you a happy autumn! Our beautiful, historic courtyard garden is an amazing resource that students and teachers have been using to great effect so far this year. Students have observed the Three Sisters, a planting technique used by Native Americans that includes squash, corn, and pole beans, and noted the symbiotic relationship between the three plants.

Not surprisingly, our school-grown cherry tomatoes have been a huge hit, in the cafeteria and the classroom. During our recent Harvest Week, students also were able to sample kale chips, made on-site with kale harvested from our garden!

In our after school gardening club, students have used a cider press to make fresh apple cider, made from local apples. They also have planted and will be studying a crop of winter wheat, in a project that will strengthen connections between science and social studies and provide students with a year-long outdoor laboratory. Soon, they will be building cold frames to help protect our garden from winter weather. Any student interested in participating is encouraged to attend on Tuesdays, from 3 to 4:15PM.

Greg is available to assist Cambridge Street Upper School teachers in using the garden in their classes. Please reach out to him if you are interested in incorporating the garden into your lessons. Possible ideas include participating in data gathering for the winter wheat project and observing heredity in action via different plant families in the garden.

Thank you!
